The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, tweeted a note on X (formerly known as Twitter) with a heavy heart on January 14, 2024, about the iconic poet Munawwar Rana. In his tweet, PM Modi thanked the legendary poet for his impeccable contribution to Urdu literature with his years of work. While sending his deepest condolences to Munawwar Rana's loved ones and family, PM Modi wished that his soul rest in peace.
The tweet broke billions of hearts across the world, as Munawwar Rana's work in Urdu literature has admirers from across the world. Whether we talk about his poems, shayari or ghazals, most of Munawwar Rana's work was centred around the importance of 'mothers' in our lives.

A lot of his work in Urdu has been translated into Hindi and English by renowned writers over the years, which is one of the major reasons he is quite popular among non-Urdu-speaking people. On January 14, 2024, Munawwar Rana took his last breath at the age of 71 in Lucknow's PGI Hospital. According to multiple sources, the iconic poet was battling with prolonged illness for some months before moving to the heavenly abode.
In a conversation with PTI (Press Trust Of India), Munawwar Rana's daughter, Sumaiya Rana opened up about her father's demise and revealed that he was admitted to the hospital for the past 14 to 15 days due to illness. It is indeed a heartbreaking moment for Munawwar Rana's family. For the unversed, Munawwar is survived by his wife, Raina Rana and children, Tabrez Rana, Sumaiya Rana, and three others whose names aren't known.
Munawwar Rana was born on November 26, 1952, in Uttar Pradesh's Rae Bareli. Despite being born in Uttar Pradesh, he spent most of his life in Kolkata. As per multiple reports, it was reportedly due to his time in Kolkata that Munawwar managed to understand Hindi and Awadhi words. In many of his poems, we have seen him using some words from the same.

It was in 2014 when Munawwar Rana was honoured with the prestigious Sahitya Akademi Award for his poem, Shahdaba. However, the iconic poet returned the award and allegedly cited the growing 'intolerance' in the country. It was a major step in Munawwar Rana's career as a poet in India, as he returned an award of so much esteem in the writers' community. Although Munawwar Rana returned the famous Sahitya Akademi Award, he never felt the scarcity of awards in his life due to his stature in the world of Urdu literature.
For instance, in 2012, Munawwar Rana was bestowed with the Maati Ratan Samman by Shaheed Shodha Sansthan for his exceptional work contribution to Urdu literature. Some notable awards that he received in his career include the likes of Ameer Khusro Award, Mir Taqi Mir Award, Ghalib Award, Dr Zakir Hussain Award, and Saraswati Samaj Award.

If there's any poet, who is way ahead of everybody else in terms of explaining why a mother's love is the greatest thing in the world, it is Munawwar Rana. The iconic poet will always be best remembered for his shayaris about 'mothers'. Although he had penned a series of shayaris on mothers during his career, there are some that hold a special place in everyone's hearts.
"Udaas rehne ko acha nahin batata hain, koi bhi zeher ko meetha nahin batta hain, kal apne aap ko dekha tha maa ki aankhoo mein, yeh aaina hume buddha nahin batata. Kisi ko ghar mila hisse mein ya koi duaa aayi, mein ghar mein sabse choota tha mere hisse mein maa aayi."
