Bengali Beauty, Sharmila Tagore is one of the most iconic actresses of her generation. She has some memorable movies like Waqt, Amar Prem, Anupama, An Evening In Paris and many more to her credit. Throughout her career, she was cast opposite superstars like Dharmendra, Rajesh Khanna, Jeetendra and others. The actress wooed the audience with her tremendous acting skills and on-screen presence.
Sharmila Tagore started her acting journey at the age of 13. She made her debut in Bengali cinema with the critically acclaimed film, Apur Sansar, directed by legendary filmmaker, Satyajit Ray. However, she debuted in the Hindi film industry in 1964 with the film, Kashmir Ki Kali. After a hiatus of 13 years, Sharmila made a comeback to the silver screen with the OTT film, Gulmohar, in 2023. During the promotion of the film, Sharmila Tagore spoke about her journey as an actress.

In an old interview with News18, Sharmila Tagore revealed the reasons behind working in films during the initial days of her career and shared that she had to work rigorously to pay her rent. Expressing her views on the same, she said:
“As professionals, we worked in films, sometimes for money and sometimes just so that we could pay the house rent. Sometimes we do a film because our colleague felt that it would be good for him if I was a part of his film.”
Sharmila Tagore fell in love with the cricket legend, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, and tied the knot with him in 1969. Together, they welcomed three children into this world, Saif Ali Khan, Saba Ali Khan and Soha Ali Khan. Back in 2013, during her presence at the 19th Justice Sunanda Bhandare Memorial Lecture, Sharmila Tagore revealed that people around her advised her against marriage and predicted that her marriage wouldn’t last long due to her film career. She revealed:
“In this context, I should mention the huge amount of advice I received when I got married. It was predicted that my marriage wouldn’t last a year if I continued working. My marriage exercised the imagination of the media and the public to a great extent. They had obviously bought into the arguments our films prescribed, namely that marriage and career were not compatible. Yet, in my case, the combination of marriage, motherhood and a successful film career did not seem to cause any friction.”

Sharmila Tagore and Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi got married on December 27, 1968, in a traditional Islamic wedding ceremony. Their marriage is known for being a successful inter-faith union and is one of India's most enduring and successful celebrity marriages. However, their marriage faced some opposition initially due to religious differences, but the couple's love and commitment towards each other prevailed, and they went on to have a happy and successful marriage.
