Raveena Tandon recalls facing criticism and body shaming at the hands of editors in the 90s

In a recent interaction with Zoom, Raveena Tandon opened up about the biggest fear she dealt with as an actress from the 90s, especially in the form of malicious remarks let out by editors of newspapers and magazines. She recalled that back in the time, the media was brutal and wouldn’t think twice before body-shaming actresses for their physique. From slut-shaming heroines to pin-pointing on physical features, Raveena revealed that it was a really sad time for actresses back in the days. She expressed:

“There was a lot of body shaming, and I’ll be very honest, the body shaming was not from the industry. Everyone very easily blames the film industry, but the film industry was the one that gave me chances. The media was body-shaming us. Editors who were women were busy slut-shaming heroines, trying to prove how nasty they’re or trying to question anyone’s body, face, or hair, and they were like, ‘Oh my God, look at her thunder thighs and Amazonian body frame’. These were the terms that the actresses were called at that time. It was sad at that time.”

Raveena claims she starved herself many times to fit the bill for the image of a desirable actress

Moving further in the conversation, Raveena Tandon remarked many of her contemporaries fell prey to the unwanted scrutiny poked by the media and pushed themselves to go through surgeries, in order to highlight their physical features. Talking about herself, Raveena mentioned that at times, she too got easily influenced by the body-shaming comments she received, and ended up starving herself. In her words:

“A lot of female actors felt pressured to go through surgeries, but luckily I didn’t have to go through that. There was a point when I was starving myself, and then I realized, that’s seriously unhealthy what I’m doing to myself.”

Raveena Tandon shared actresses in 90s were closely bonded with one another

Previously, in an interaction with Film Companion, Raveena Tandon shared how actresses, especially her contemporaries in the 90s were quite closely bonded with one another, as compared to the cold wars many actresses share now. The diva remarked that due to the lack of social media and other forms of entertainment, she and her colleagues had no other option than to sit together and interact. In her words:

“There was no other form of entertainment. There were no smartphones, and there were no luxury vans. As soon as the shot gets over, everyone buzzes off to their phones or vans. So we’ve all been left to our own defenses. We had no other option but to put the chairs together and sit down, whether we were shooting in the sands of the desert or in the midst of the jungle. You had no choice but to sit with each other.”
