Kim Kardashian's Iconic Fashion Evolution Over The Years, From Dash To Balenciaga And Beyond

Kim Kardashian is the ultimate fashion icon of the decade. However, this has not always been the scene. Kim Kardashian first emerged in the spotlight as the best friend of Paris Hilton in 2006, and from there onwards, there was no looking back for the socialite.

Kim's fashion choices have evolved drastically, much like her career choices. Back in the day, bodycon dresses were Kim's go-to outfit, and today, she prefers structured bodysuits over everything else. With time, she has traded her Juicy Couture tracksuits for Balenciaga's Panta leggings. It’s safe to say that she has transformed herself into a modern-day fashion icon! Let's look through Kim Kardashian's fashion transformation over the years.

#1. The stylist and best friend of Paris Hilton

Kim-K began her career as a celebrity stylist of Serena Williams, Cindy Crawford and Paris Hilton. During this 'stylish phase' of her, she learnt a lot about brands, labels and trends. This was reflected in her fashion choices back then.

Kim and Paris were inseparable in 2006. They were often spotted together wearing coordinated outfits. Kim's fashion choices during this phase consisted of metallic textures, plunging necklines, babydoll dresses, white tunics, comfortable flats, chunky sunglasses with loads of lip gloss and huge LV bags.

#2. The Ray-J factor

Kim started dating rapper, Ray J in 2006 and made many red-carpet appearances alongside him. Her outfit in these events consisted of skintight ensembles with plunging necklines, gigantic belts and knee-high boots. This style stuck with her for a few years and soon became her signature look. In 2007, her sex tape with Ray J got leaked, which landed her a contract with channel ‘E’. This marked the beginning of the Keeping Up With The Kardashians era.

#3. Keeping Up With The Kardashians

Keeping Up With The Kardashians was a hit from the very beginning, and Kim, along with her siblings and mother, Kris Jenner, became a household name. Kim was seen in many bodycon dresses in the show, along with her staple juicy couture pieces. Along with these, she wore a lot of low-rise tracksuits in pastel and neutral shades. For special appearances, she stuck with curve-hugging outfits in vibrant colours. Gradually her style changed to a more glammed-up one, and she switched to matte makeup instead of glossy.

Looking back to her initial fashion choices, Kim told Vogue in 2019:

“Oh my God, OK, this is so embarrassing; I probably borrowed this dress at Dash, kept the tag on or just re-tagged it, and then returned it afterwards.”

#4. The glow-up era

In 2009 Kim Kardashian had her major glow-up. By this time, she was a Hollywood socialite and a star in the making. As the days passed, her style became more urban, and she polished off well. She even started experimenting with her looks and served something new every time she stepped out. Kim went all out when she decided to dye her hair honey blonde.

Kim started dating Kris Humphries in 2010 and started adapting to the smoky eye makeup trend. She also embraced diamond jewellery and glitzy accessories. As she married Humphries in 2011, she opted for a complete princess moment with a ballgown and a glitzy headpiece. After her infamous 72-days-long marriage ended, Kim got into the trend of heavy, contour, vibrant silhouettes.

#5. The Kanye West magic

If someone significantly contribution to Kim's current style, it is her third husband, Kanye West. The music Mogul changed her entire wardrobe. He set her wardrobe as per his standards and threw away everything that didn’t deem fit for him. West introduced her to bigshot labels and dressed her in expensive custom-made outfits. In short, he gave her a complete makeover. Labels like Balmain and Lanvin were now creating outfits for the socialite.

Kanye introduced Kim to Riccardo Tisci, the creative director of Givenchy, who gave her the ticket to her first-ever Met Gala. The floral gown sparked the meme fest. However, this marked the beginning of Kim’s Met Gala stardom.

#6. The iconic monochromes

Kim married Kanye in 2014, and with that, she began her new phase of life as a wife, mother and model. In 2015, Kanye started his brand, Yeezy, and Kim modelled for the same. She incorporated Yeezy’s monochrome outfits into her signature look during this time. Her monochrome look became very popular, and to date, she is tagged as the monochrome queen.

In 2015, Kim dyed her hair platinum blonde for Paris Fashion Week. This look of hers is highly appreciated till today. Talking about her hair transformation Kim in a 2019 interview with Vogue:

“I would let them just dress me up like a doll, I didn’t even care; I knew between Riccardo (Tisci), Carine (Roitfeld) and Kanye, they would make me look like the chicest person ever, and they did. Look at this look. I loved it.”

#7. Kim, the diva

Kim started her shape-wear brand, Skims, in 2019, and after that, she started wearing many skin-showing outfits. She was either seen in a full-blown naked dress or in her athleisure. She would dress like a Malibu doll with risque cut-outs, and a lot of them would be in neon colours. She would even sport a neon hair wig matching her outfit.

Her biggest fashion boom was at the 2019 Met Gala, where she wore a wet look by Thierry Mugler. The dress gave an illusion of a wet look with water droplets. She even wore a corset underneath the dress, which gave her a synched look. As her business endeavours took over, Kim was increasingly seen in rare vintage looks from Versace, Alexander McQueen and Alaïa.

#8. The post-divorce era

Kim and the music mogul, Kanye split in 2022, and after that, her fashion choices were inclined towards being the ‘futuristic Barbie’. In February 2022, Kim became the official face of the luxury brand, Balenciaga. She continued wearing bold statement pieces and body-hugging outfits. She was seen sporting a lot of catsuits, chunky sunglasses and pink ensembles. However, her 2022 Met Gala look, a recreation of the iconic Marilyn Monroe dress, sparked much controversy but was iconic nonetheless. In addition, her most recent appearance at the 2023, Dolce and Gabbana show in a purple gown with a diamond neckpiece and princess hairdo, screamed royalty.
